Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team features Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the group knows exactly where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into the secret base, attacking the character, and swiping all the powerful objects to auction.

Casimir then settled his debts and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each member has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as important members in House Halovar could help the group access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern the city for a multiple motives, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight players to form the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Fans can expect learning which players will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, released on next week.
