Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
